Single-Phase or Three-Phase Charging?

Most Sydney homes have single-phase power, and for most drivers that’s all you need. A typical single-phase home charger delivers around 7 kW, enough to add a full day’s driving in a few hours overnight.

Three-phase power allows chargers of up to 22 kW, but faster isn’t always better. Many EVs can only accept 7 to 11 kW when charging from AC, so a bigger charger won’t charge them any quicker. It’s worth checking your car’s limit before you choose.

Before we recommend a charger, we look at:

Larger chargers also need to be notified to the network operator, which is Ausgrid in the Eastern Suburbs and North Shore. We take care of that paperwork, test everything and issue your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) when the job is done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a normal electrician install an EV charger?

Any licensed electrician can install a home EV charger in NSW, but it pays to choose one who does them regularly. The job involves checking your switchboard and supply, sizing a dedicated circuit, choosing the right safety switch protection and, for larger chargers, notifying the network. Done properly, your charger runs safely for years.

Not always. Many homes can take a 7 kW charger as is, but older switchboards with ceramic fuses, no spare space or no safety switches usually need work first. We check your board and main supply before we start, and if an upgrade is needed we can do it at the same time as the charger installation.

Yes, if your home already has three-phase power or the supply is upgraded. A three-phase charger can charge much faster, but only if your car can accept it, as many EVs are limited to around 7 to 11 kW on AC charging. If your home is single-phase, a 7 kW charger is usually the right fit for overnight charging.

You can, using the cable that came with the car, but it’s slow and best kept for occasional use. Running a power point at full load for hours, especially on older wiring, can cause overheating. A dedicated charger on its own circuit is faster, safer and much better suited to charging every day.

It’s the advice to charge your battery to around 80% for everyday driving and save 100% for long trips. Keeping the battery out of the very top of its range helps it last longer, and most cars and smart chargers let you set this limit. With a home charger, you can top up to 80% overnight and start every day ready to go.
